With the Tunnellers - August 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant and evocative drawing by Lieutenant Will H. Dyson, an Australian official war artist who captured the essence of the Anzac spirit during World War I. Dyson, who joined the Australian Imperial Force in 1914, was wounded twice but continued to produce a large body of work documenting the experiences of Australian soldiers at the front. In this powerful image, Dyson depicts a group of weary tunnellers, their faces etched with the grime and exhaustion of their labor. The tunnellers were an essential part of the military effort on the Western Front, digging tunnels to install mines and undermine enemy positions. Their work was dangerous and grueling, often carried out in cramped and difficult conditions. The drawing captures the camaraderie and resilience of the men, who lean on each other for support and share a moment of rest amidst the chaos of war. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and texture, drawing the viewer into the scene and immersing them in the harsh realities of the trenches. Dyson's work was exhibited in London during the war and published in the book "Australia at War" in November 1918. His drawings are an invaluable historical record of the Anzac experience and continue to captivate audiences with their raw emotion and unflinching honesty. This image, in particular, is considered one of Dyson's finest works and is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Anzac spirit. The drawing is dated August 1917, and the men depicted are dressed in the uniform of the Australian Imperial Force. The image is a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the First World War and the importance of preserving their stories for future generations. This powerful and moving image is a must-have for any military or historical collection.
