EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image, titled "Company Awaiting Relief - The Caterpillar, Villes-sur-Ancre," was captured by Lieutenant Will H. Dyson in 1918 during the final months of World War I. Dyson, an Australian Imperial Force soldier and prolific artist, joined the army in 1914 and was wounded twice before being appointed as an official war artist at the Western Front in 1915. His unique perspective as both a soldier and an artist allowed him to create a vast collection of drawings that documented the daily life and experiences of Australian soldiers in battle. In this particular drawing, Dyson captures the tense anticipation of a company of soldiers as they wait for relief in the muddy, rain-soaked trenches of Villes-sur-Ancre. The ominous title "The Caterpillar" likely refers to the German artillery that posed a constant threat to the Allied forces. The soldiers huddle together, seeking shelter from the elements and the imminent danger that looms on the horizon. Their expressions convey a mixture of anxiety, exhaustion, and determination, reflecting the harsh realities of life on the Western Front. Dyson's war cartoons were exhibited in London in 1918, and he published a collection of his finest drawings in the book "Australia at War" later that year. His powerful and evocative images continue to be an invaluable historical record of the Australian experience during World War I.
