This portrait captures the regal presence of Sultan Mehmed V Reshad, the 35th and final Ottoman Sultan, in the twilight years of the once-mighty Ottoman Empire. Born in 1844, Mehmed V ascended to the throne in 1909, during a time of political instability and economic decline. His reign was marked by attempts to modernize the Ottoman administration and military, as well as efforts to maintain the empire's territorial integrity in the face of encroaching European powers.
