Suenos Stones - Forres
Suenos Stone - A Scottish Pictish Standing Stone at Forres, Scotland. The largest surving standing stone of its type in Scotland. The east face (visible on this postcard) has four panels that show a large battle scene. The top panel is quite weathered and shows rows of horsemen. The second panel down depicts armed foot soldiers and the third panel shows the decapitated vanquished soldiers, the heads piled up, and soldiers, archers and horsemen surrounding what may be a broch. The base panel depicts the victorious army leaving the battlefield. One theory is that the soldiers depicted are the army of Kenneth MacAlpin. Date: circa 1950s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard image showcases the enigmatic Suenos Stone, a prominent Pictish standing stone located in Forres, Scotland. Dating back to the late Pictish period, around the 9th century AD, this monumental relic is the largest surviving standing stone of its kind in Scotland, standing tall at over 12 feet high. The eastern face of the Suenos Stone is adorned with intricately carved panels, each telling a story of the Pictish past. The top panel, though weathered, depicts rows of horsemen, their horses rearing and ready for battle. The second panel down reveals armed foot soldiers, their shields and spears at the ready. The third panel shows the vanquished soldiers, their decapitated heads piled up, and the victorious army surrounding what may be a broch, a type of circular fortification common in Pictish times. The base panel illustrates the victorious army leaving the battlefield, their triumphant departure etched in stone. One intriguing theory suggests that the soldiers depicted on the Suenos Stone may be the army of Kenneth MacAlpin, the first king of Scotland, who united the Picts and Scots in the late 9th century. The exact meaning and significance of the carvings remain a mystery, but they offer a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Pictish people. The Suenos Stone stands proudly, protected by railings, in the heart of Forres, inviting visitors to ponder the stories it holds and the history it represents. This postcard image, captured in the 1950s, offers a glimpse into the past, a testament to the enduring allure of Scotland's ancient heritage.
