1869 Bombed Estate Founded Opened Orphanage Spurgeon Stockwell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Stockwell Orphanage, a historic building located off Stockwell Park Road in Brixton, London. Established in 1869 by the renowned Baptist preacher and social reformer, Charles Spurgeon, the orphanage provided a home for hundreds of children in need. The image, taken circa 1913, shows the imposing red-brick building with its grand entrance and surrounding gardens. Charles Spurgeon, a man of great compassion and vision, saw the need to provide a safe haven for orphaned and destitute children in his community. With the support of his congregation, he purchased a large plot of land on Stockwell Park Road and opened the Stockwell Orphanage. Over the years, the orphanage grew, and it became a vital part of the local community, providing not only shelter and food but also education and spiritual guidance. Tragically, during World War Two, the orphanage was hit by a bomb, causing significant damage. Despite this setback, the orphanage continued to operate, and the children were eventually moved to temporary accommodation while the building was repaired. Today, the site of the Stockwell Orphanage is part of the Stockwell Park Estate, a housing development. The building itself no longer stands, but its legacy lives on, a testament to the vision and compassion of Charles Spurgeon and the many people who worked tirelessly to care for the children who called it home.
