EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historical significance of Stephensons No. 2 Killingworth Locomotive, one of George Stephenson's earliest creations built at Killingworth Colliery near Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in the late 1820s. Named after the Prussian General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, whose timely assistance helped secure a decisive victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, this locomotive was part of a series of experimental designs that revolutionized the transportation industry. The Blücher locomotive marked a crucial milestone in railway history as it was the first to incorporate flanged wheels, a critical innovation that vastly improved traction and kept the locomotive on the tracks. The adoption of flanged wheels allowed for smoother and more efficient movement, paving the way for the development of more advanced and powerful steam-powered locomotives. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the intricate details of the Blücher's design, from its robust boiler and cylinders to its intricately crafted wheels. As a testament to the ingenuity and vision of George Stephenson, this locomotive represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of rail transport and the industrial revolution. The Killingworth Colliery, situated on the banks of the River Tyne, played a vital role in the development of the railway industry, providing a testing ground for innovative designs and technologies. This photograph serves as a reminder of the rich history of rail transport and the pioneering spirit that drove its inception and growth.
