EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Sopwith Buffalo two-seat support and reconnaissance plane, serial number H 5892, during the waning days of World War I. The Buffalo, a biplane design produced by the British Sopwith Aviation Company, first appeared in September 1918, unfortunately too late to go into full production. This aircraft, a versatile machine, was intended for both air support and reconnaissance roles. The image shows the Buffalo sitting on the ground, its engine idling, as ground crew members attend to it. The plane's distinctive biplane configuration, with its narrow wings and large, pusher propeller, is clearly visible. The open cockpit seating arrangement, with the observer seated behind the pilot, is also evident. The Buffalo's armament, including the Lewis Gun mounted on the observer's position, is also visible. The Buffalo was a significant development in the evolution of military aviation during World War I. Although it didn't see widespread use in combat, it represented a step forward in the integration of aircraft into ground support operations. This photograph serves as a reminder of the crucial role that aviation played in the 1st Great War and the continued innovation and progress that marked the era of wartime flight.
