Sitt Zumurrud Khatuns Tomb, Baghdad, Iraq

Sitt Zumurrud Khatuns Tomb. This is the most famous mausoleum in Baghdad. It is situated in the western sector of Baghdad not faraway from the main railway station.Erroneously ascribed to Sitt Zubeida (see postcard caption!), wife of Caliph Harun Al-Rashid, who was actually buried in the Qureish cemeteries in Al-Kadhimeyya, it is in fact the tomb of Zumurrud Khatoun, wife of the Caliph Al-Mustadhi Bi-Amrillah, who had it constructed as a mausoleum for herself sometime before 1202 AD, during the reign of her son, the Caliph Al-Naser Li Dinillah. The mausoleum is octagonal in shape and surmounted by a high conical-shaped dome in Seljuk style, one of the most remarkable in the city. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sitt Zumurrud Khatun's Tomb: A Historical Gem in Baghdad, Iraq This photograph showcases the stunning Sitt Zumurrud Khatun's Tomb, located in the western sector of Baghdad, not far from the main railway station. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the tomb of Zubeida, wife of Caliph Harun Al-Rashid, but rather that of Zumurrud Khatoun, wife of Caliph Al-Mustadhi Bi-Amrillah. The misconception arose due to the erroneous ascription on postcards. Zumurrud Khatoun had this magnificent mausoleum constructed for herself before 1202 AD, during the reign of her son, the Caliph Al-Naser Li Dinillah. The tomb's unique octagonal shape, topped with a high conical-shaped dome in Seljuk style, is one of the most remarkable architectural wonders in the city. The Seljuk-style dome, a testament to the rich history of Iraqi architecture, is a funerary monument that stands proudly by the riverside. The mausoleum's intricate design and historical significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history and culture of Baghdad. Dating back to the 1910s, this photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of grandeur and splendor. The Sitt Zumurrud Khatun's Tomb is a reminder of the fascinating history that lies hidden in the corners of this ancient city.
