This exquisite 16th century Persian miniature painting, titled "The Death of Firoud and his Mother Dherireh (Jarira)" from the Shahnameh, or "The Book of Kings," depicts a poignant moment in the epic Persian poem's narrative. The scene illustrates the tragic death of Firoud and his mother Dherireh (also known as Jarira) over the body of their slain prince. The Shahnameh, an epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between 977 and 1010 CE, recounts the mythical and historical tales of ancient Persia. This particular scene comes from the story of Siyavash, a noble prince who is falsely accused of treason and sentenced to death by his brother. Firoud, Siyavash's loyal servant, is also executed alongside his master. In this painting, we see Firoud lying on the ground, his body lifeless, while his mother Dherireh, dressed in mourning attire, stands over him, her face contorted in grief. She has just taken her own life by plunging a dagger into her chest, unable to bear the loss of her beloved son. The scene is rendered in intricate detail using gouache on paper, a technique commonly used in Persian miniature painting during the Safavid period. The painting is now housed in the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France, and is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Persian culture.
