Marriage of Princess Alice to Prince Louis

The marriage of Princess Alice, third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria, to Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, in the dining room of Osborne House, the Royal residence on the Isle of Wight. Between the announcement of their engagement and the wedding itself, the Prince Consort, Albert, had died in December 1861, and the subsequent long period of mourning overshadowed the ceremony, a mood not helped by dreary weather on the day. Above the altar is the celebrated painting by Winterhalter of Queen Victoria, Albert and the Royal children, and above the doorway to the left is a portrait of the Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria, who had died in March 1861. Watched by her mother, seated to the left, and family, Alice was given away by her uncle, Alberts brother Ernest, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and had four bridesmaids - her sisters Helena, Louise and Beatrice, and Princess Anna, the sister of Louis.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Princess Alice, the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria, exchanges vows with Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt in the dining room of Osborne House, the Royal residence on the Isle of Wight. The marriage took place on 2 July 1862, following the announcement of their engagement, which was overshadowed by the prolonged mourning period for Prince Albert, who had passed away in December 1861. The somber mood of the ceremony was further accentuated by the dreary weather on the day. Above the altar, the celebrated painting by Winterhalter of Queen Victoria, Albert, and their Royal children, served as a poignant reminder of the lost love and the family that was no longer complete. Above the doorway to the left, a portrait of the Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria, who had passed away in March 1861, looked down upon the scene. Seated to the left of the altar, Princess Alice was given away by her uncle, Ernest, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, brother of the late Prince Consort. The bride had four bridesmaids, her sisters Helena, Louise, and Beatrice, and Princess Anna, the sister of Louis, who accompanied her down the aisle. This photograph captures a poignant moment in history, as the Royal family came together to celebrate a new union amidst the lingering grief of a great loss. The image offers a glimpse into the personal lives of the Royal family, and the traditions and rituals that surrounded a Royal wedding during this time.
