EDITORS COMMENTS
A Page from The Illustrated London News: Royal Wedding 1947 - Presents for the Royal Bride On November 20, 1947, Princess Elizabeth of York married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in a grand wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The event was celebrated around the world, and The Illustrated London News documented the occasion with a special feature on the presents given to the young bride. Among the objects of beauty, interest, and use presented to Princess Elizabeth were several electric cleaning machines. The Directors and employees of Messrs. Hoover Ltd. gifted the princess an electric vacuum cleaner, a practical and innovative appliance that would have been a welcome addition to the newlyweds' household. The people of Leamington Spa also presented an electric washing machine, a cumbersome but essential item for keeping the royal laundry clean and fresh. Other gifts included a turkey bought by Miss Julie Aloro of the United States from her savings, a heartfelt gesture from a young girl. A piece of crochet lace from Mahatma Gandhi, worked by the Indian leader himself, was also among the presents. The intricately designed lace, a symbol of peace and unity, was a thoughtful and meaningful addition to the princess's collection. This page from The Illustrated London News offers a glimpse into the presents received by Princess Elizabeth on her wedding day, reflecting the generosity and goodwill of people from all walks of life. The gifts, a testament to the global significance of the royal wedding, continue to hold historical value and remain an intriguing part of the royal family's rich history.
