The royal party at Covent Garden Opera, for the performance of Romeo and Juliet. From left to right: the Duke of York, Princess May of Teck(1867-1953), Grand Duke of Hesse, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the Czarevitch(later Tsar Nicholas II), Queen of Denmark, Princess of Wales and the King of Denmark. Two days later, Princess May of Teck married the Duke of York. Later, they became King George V and Queen Mary.

This photograph captures a rare moment in history, as the future King George V and Queen Mary attend a performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Covent Garden Opera in London, just two days before their wedding on July 6, 1893. The royal party is pictured in the opera box, with the Duke of York, later King George V, seated next to his bride-to-be, Princess May of Teck. The Grand Duke of Hesse and Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz are also present, as well as the Czarevitch, later Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, the Queen of Denmark, and the Princess of Wales. The atmosphere is festive, with the opera house adorned with beautiful floral decorations, and the royal guests dressed in elegant attire. The future king can be seen wearing glasses, perhaps to enjoy the performance more fully. This photograph offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of a royal wedding celebration over a century ago.
