EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of take-off for Alcock and Brown's groundbreaking transatlantic flight aboard the Vickers Vimy G-EAQC, on June 14, 1919. The intrepid aviators, John Alcock and Arthur Brown, are seen in the cockpit of their modified bomber aircraft, ready to embark on the first direct non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. The Vickers Vimy, a British-built biplane, was chosen for its long-range capabilities and reliability. It had already proven itself in military service during World War I, but this flight would push its limits to the extreme. Newfoundland's Gander aerodrome, located on the eastern coast of the island, served as the departure point for this daring journey. The successful completion of this flight would not only make Alcock and Brown the first aviators to fly non-stop across the Atlantic but also set a new standard for long-distance aviation. Their destination was the small town of Clifden, Ireland, over 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) away. The flight took them 16 hours and 28 minutes, and the successful landing on Irish soil marked the end of an era in aviation history. This photograph is a testament to the courage, determination, and ingenuity of Alcock and Brown, who achieved the seemingly impossible and opened up a new world of possibilities for air travel. The Vickers Vimy, with its distinctive silhouette and the indomitable spirit of its pilots, continues to inspire awe and admiration to this day.
