Entrance to the Rowton House on Bond Street (now Bondway) at Vauxhall, South London. Rowton Houses, of which six were erected around London, were large, purpose-built, low-cost hostels or doss-houses for working men. They were established by Lord Rowton (Montagu William Lowry Corry), with Vauxhall being the first to open in 1892. Date: 1895

This evocative photograph captures the entrance to Rowton House on Bond Street in Vauxhall, South London, built in 1892 as the first of six large, purpose-built, low-cost hostels or doss-houses for working men. Established by the philanthropist Montagu William Lowry Corry, who went by the title Lord Rowton, these Rowton Houses were designed to provide affordable accommodation for men who struggled to find shelter in the overcrowded and expensive city. The image, taken in 1895, shows the grandeur of the entrance contrasted with the worn-out appearance of the men gathered outside. The Rowton Houses were not charities but rather business ventures, with residents paying a small weekly fee for a bed and a meal. The buildings, which could house up to 500 men each, were designed to be self-sufficient, with on-site laundry facilities, workshops, and even a savings bank. The success of the Vauxhall Rowton House led to the establishment of five more around London, providing much-needed relief for thousands of working men in the late 19th century.
