EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the quiet intimacy of the Rowton House Reading Room in Vauxhall, South London, in 1895. Established by Montagu William Lowry Corry, 2nd Viscount Rowton, the Rowton Houses were a groundbreaking initiative to provide affordable accommodation for working men in London. The first Rowton House opened in Vauxhall in 1892, with five more following suit in various parts of the city. The Reading Room at the Vauxhall Rowton House was a popular gathering place for the residents, offering them a respite from the harsh realities of urban life. The large, low-cost hostels provided a sense of community and camaraderie among the working men, many of whom were laborers, sailors, or soldiers. The Reading Room was an essential part of the Rowton House experience, offering a space for relaxation, education, and social interaction. The photograph shows the Reading Room in its prime, with men engrossed in their books, newspapers, or in deep conversation. The room is furnished with comfortable chairs and tables, and the walls are adorned with shelves filled with an extensive collection of books. The atmosphere is peaceful and contemplative, a stark contrast to the bustling streets outside. The Rowton Houses were an important social welfare innovation of the late Victorian era, providing affordable housing and essential services to thousands of working men in London. The Reading Room at the Vauxhall Rowton House was a testament to the vision of Lord Rowton, who believed that every man deserved a decent place to live and a chance to better himself through education and self-improvement.
