Ras Makonnen, also known as Makunan, was a prominent Ethiopian general and a key figure in the late 19th century Ethiopian military. Born around 1852, Ras Makonnen rose through the ranks of the Ethiopian military under Emperor Yohannes IV, eventually becoming one of his most trusted and capable commanders. In this striking photograph, Ras Makonnen is depicted wearing the traditional Ethiopian robe and headdress of a Ras, or provincial governor.
