Queen Marys visit to Poplar Schools at Brentwood

In 1906, the Poplar Union (East London) established a Schools site located between Shenfield and Hutton, near Brentwood, Essex. As well as cottage homes, each housing 30 pauper children, the site had its own schools, infirmary, chapel, swimming pool etc. Here, Queen Mary watches the boys marching past during her visit in 1919. To her left is the Poor Law reformer George Lansbury who, as a member of the Poplar Board of Guardians, had been instrumental in setting up the Schools

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Queen Mary, the Queen Consort of King George V, pays a visit to the Poplar Schools in Brentwood, Essex, in 1919. The Poplar Union, an East London institution established in 1906, had set up this Schools site between Shenfield and Hutton, which included cottage homes for 30 pauper children each, a schools complex, infirmary, chapel, and even a swimming pool. Queen Mary is seen here watching intently as a group of boys from the Schools march past her. To her left stands George Lansbury, a prominent figure in the Poplar Board of Guardians, who had played a pivotal role in setting up the Schools. Lansbury was a renowned Poor Law reformer, and his efforts had led to the creation of this innovative residential and educational institution for children in need. The photograph captures the essence of a historical moment, as the Queen and the reformer oversee the progress of the children, who have undergone training and education in this institution designed to help them overcome poverty and social hardships. The image is a poignant reminder of the past, when institutions like the Poplar Schools played a crucial role in providing care and support to the most vulnerable members of society. The photograph, taken in the Edwardian era, offers a glimpse into the history of child welfare and social reform in Britain, and the significant impact of institutions like the Poplar Schools on the lives of countless children. The image is a testament to the enduring legacy of these institutions and the visionary leaders who established them. This photograph is a valuable historical document, showcasing a moment of royal patronage and social reform in the early 20th century. It is a reminder of the importance of education and care in addressing poverty and social challenges, and the role that institutions like the Poplar Schools have played in shaping the lives of generations of children.
