EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Young Princess May of Teck: A Portrait of H.R.H. Princess May Abel Smith (Later Lady May Cambridge) in 1915" 2.. This evocative black-and-white portrait captures the youthful charm and elegance of Princess May Abel Smith (later Lady May Cambridge), the eldest daughter of His Royal Highness Prince Alexander of Teck and Princess Alice. Born on May 25, 1867, Princess May was the granddaughter of King George III of Württemberg and Princess Therese of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. In this image, taken in 1915, the young princess, then aged 48, is depicted in a simple yet elegant gown, adorned with a delicate necklace and a small brooch. Her expressive eyes and gentle smile radiate warmth and charm, revealing the depth of her character. The portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the princess's vibrant personality and her significant role in the British royal family. At the time of this photograph, Princess May was known as the Duchess of Teck and held the title of the Countess of Athlone following her marriage to the 7th Earl of Athlone, Henry Alexander Wentworth Frederick Lascelles, in 1893. The couple went on to have three children: Lady May Abel Smith, Alexander Windsor, and Lady Catherine Windsor. As the years passed, Princess May's title changed once again when her husband was created Marquess of Cambridge in 1917, making her Lady May Cambridge. The princess continued to play an active role in the royal family and charitable organizations until her death in 1956. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on the history of the British monarchy.
