EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, is captured in a tender moment with her two young children, Lady May Cambridge and Prince Rupert of Teck, in 1918. The Countess, born Princess Alice of Albany in 1883, was the eldest daughter of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, and granddaughter of Queen Victoria. She married her cousin, Prince Alexander of Teck, Earl of Athlone, in 1904, and together they raised a loving family. The eldest child, Lady May Cambridge, born in 1906, is seen here gazing up at her mother with a look of adoration. She would later marry Captain Henry Abel Smith in 1931, and went on to become the Governor-General of Australia from 1973 to 1974. The younger child, Prince Rupert of Teck, born in 1907, is seated on his mother's lap, his expression thoughtful and serious. Sadly, Rupert suffered from haemophilia, a condition that would ultimately claim his life in a tragic car accident in 1928 at the young age of 21. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the personal lives of the royal family during a time of great change, as the world adjusted to the aftermath of the First World War. The Countess's warm and nurturing presence is palpable, as she lovingly holds her children close, offering a sense of comfort and security in uncertain times. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human side of royalty, and the enduring bonds of family.
