EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Prince Maurice of Battenberg, the youngest son of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg, is seen intently watching the field as the horses approach the starting post at a steeplechase meeting at Highworth, in 1912. The young prince, dressed in a smart hunting outfit, is deep in thought as he prepares for the day's racing events. Born in 1890, Prince Maurice was a popular member of the British royal family, known for his adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors. Before the outbreak of World War I, he served in the British Army, holding the rank of lieutenant in the 60th regiment of the King's Royal Rifle Corps. Despite his privileged upbringing, Prince Maurice was determined to experience life as a common soldier. He spent long hours training with his men, and was well-respected for his leadership and dedication. Tragically, Prince Maurice's military career was cut short when he was hit by a shell while leading his company at the Battle of Ypres in October 1914. Despite being evacuated to a dressing station, he succumbed to his wounds and died later that day, at the young age of 24. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the young prince's passion for life and his commitment to serving his country, even in the face of great danger. It also highlights the tragic reality of the war, which claimed the lives of countless young men, including members of the royal family, during this period.
