Prince Louis of Battenberg with his sons
Prince Louis of Battenberg (1854-1921), British First Sea Lord in 1914 with his sons, George (right) and Louis (Lord Louis Mountbatten). During the first few months of World War I, anti-German feeling among the British public forced him to resign. The Prince had taken British nationality at the age of fourteen and those who knew him had no doubt of his loyalty. Prince George of Battenberg continued on active service and the younger Prince Louis (left) joined him as a midshipman shortly after the Battle of Jutland. When the same tide of anti-German feeling forced the royal family to abandon German names and titles their family name became Mountbatten. Prince Louis of Battenberg was married to Princess Victoria of Hesse, eldest daughter of Princess Alice

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Prince Louis of Battenberg, British First Sea Lord in 1914, is seen with his two sons, Prince George and Prince Louis (later known as Lord Louis Mountbatten). The image was taken during the first few months of World War I, a time when anti-German sentiment among the British public led to the Prince's resignation. Despite his British nationality, which he had acquired at the age of fourteen, and the undoubted loyalty of those who knew him, the tide of public opinion forced the royal family to abandon their German names and titles. Prince George continued on active service, while the younger Prince Louis joined him as a midshipman shortly after the Battle of Jutland. The Prince's eldest daughter, Princess Victoria of Hesse, is also depicted in the photograph, seated next to her husband. When the royal family renounced their German names and titles, their family name became Mountbatten. This photograph captures a poignant moment in history, as the Prince and his sons faced the challenges of war and the shifting political landscape of the time. The image serves as a reminder of the complexities of royal families and their roles in times of conflict. Prince Louis of Battenberg was born in 1854 and was married to Princess Victoria of Hesse, the eldest daughter of Princess Alice. The Prince's loyalty to Britain was never in question, but the anti-German sentiment of the time ultimately forced him to resign from his position as First Sea Lord in 1914. His sons, George and Louis, continued to serve their country, with the younger Prince Louis joining his father as a midshipman. The image is a poignant reminder of the complexities of royal families and their roles in times of conflict.
