EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, an undervest, disguised as the spirit "Peggy," is seen sitting in a chair next to Scottish medium Helen Duncan during a séance in Edinburgh on May 11, 1933. This image is part of a series documenting investigations into the mediumship of Helen Duncan and Esson Maule, who played a pivotal role in exposing her as a fraud. Helen Duncan, a well-known medium, was believed by many to be able to communicate with the dead and materialize spirits during her séances. However, Harry Price, a renowned paranormal investigator, suspected that her abilities were a hoax. He and Esson Maule, a magician, attended one of her séances with the intention of uncovering the truth. During the séance, the undervest, which was actually being manipulated by Esson Maule, appeared to materialize from thin air and took on the form of a spirit named "Peggy." The disguise was made of tattered cloth and was intended to deceive those present into believing that a genuine spirit had manifested. The photograph shows the undervest sitting in the chair next to Helen Duncan, adding to the deception and convincing many in attendance that they were witnessing a genuine spiritual manifestation. However, Price and Maule were able to expose the fraud by revealing the source of the undervest and the use of other hidden wires and mechanisms. This photograph, HPG/1/4/3 (xii), is an important historical document of the investigation into Helen Duncan's mediumship and the exposure of her fraudulent practices. It is a reminder of the intrigue and skepticism that surrounded spiritualism and the paranormal during this time and the importance of critical investigation and evidence in understanding the unknown.
