Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3-B (werknummer 4101) Black 12 of the RAF St. Athan RAF Museum Reserve Collection outside the Museum on RAF St. Athan East Camp. built by Erla Maschinenwerk at Liepzig, Black 12 was operated by 2-JG51 from Wissant, near Calais, at the time it was forced to make a wheels-up landing at RAF Manston, on 27 November 1940. After repairs at RAE Farnborough she was allocated the military serial DG200 and issued to Rolls-Royce at Hucknall for testing. Surviving the war she was displayed in various places before being fully restored at the RAF St. Athan collection. After the closure of the St. Athan collection she was moved the the RAF Museum at Hendon. Date: circa 1980

This photograph showcases the iconic Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3-B (werknummer 4101), also known as Black 12, parked outside the RAF St. Athan RAF Museum Reserve Collection on RAF St. Athan East Camp. Originally built by Erla Maschinenwerk in Liepzig, Germany, this historic Messerschmitt fighter was operated by the German fighter unit 2-JG51, based in Wissant, near Calais, during World War II. On 27 November 1940, Black 12 was forced to make an emergency wheels-up landing at RAF Manston. After undergoing repairs at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) Farnborough, it was allocated the military serial DG200 and issued to Rolls-Royce at Hucknall for testing. Remarkably, this Messerschmitt fighter survived the war and was displayed in various locations before undergoing a full restoration at the RAF St. Athan collection. After the closure of the St. Athan collection, Black 12 was moved to the RAF Museum at Hendon, where it continues to be a testament to the aviation history of World War II.
