EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Cox-Klemin CO-1 P-377 is seen undergoing evaluation at McCook Field in 1924. The CO-1 and CO-2, company designations for licence-built Heinkel HD17 reconnaissance biplanes, were powered by Napier Lion and Liberty L-12 engines respectively. The CO-1, serially numbered P-377 at McCook Field, and the CO-2, serially numbered P-379, were not related to the Engineering Division CO-1 and CO-2, which were US Army designations in the Corps Observation category. The Heinkel HD17 was a two-seat, open-cockpit biplane that was originally designed for military reconnaissance purposes by the German Heinkel Flugzeugwerke. The CO-1 and CO-2 were imported into the United States for evaluation by the US Army Air Service. The Napier Lion engine, a 12-cylinder, W-type, liquid-cooled engine, was a British design, while the Liberty L-12 engine was an American V-12, air-cooled engine. The evaluation of the CO-1 and CO-2 at McCook Field was an important moment in the history of American aviation. McCook Field, located in Dayton, Ohio, was the US Army Air Service's primary flight test center and played a crucial role in the development of military aviation in the United States. The evaluation of the CO-1 and CO-2 provided valuable insights into the capabilities of these advanced reconnaissance biplanes and contributed to the modernization of the US Army Air Service's fleet. This photograph captures a moment in time when the future of military aviation was being shaped by the evaluation of innovative technologies and designs. The Cox-Klemin CO-1 P-377 and the CO-2, with their advanced engines and reconnaissance capabilities, represented the cutting edge of aeronautical engineering in the early 1920s.
