Austrasia Dynasty Frankish Mayor Pepin Pippin Herstal

EDITORS COMMENTS
Pepin of Herstal, also known as Pepin II, Arnulfing, or Pippin II, was a prominent Frankish leader of the 7th and 8th centuries, serving as Mayor of the Palace for the realms of Austrasia from 680 until his death, and later ruling Neustria and Burgundy from 687 to 695. This striking colored engraving, created in the 19th century, depicts Pepin in a regal seated position, donning the traditional Frankish attire of the time. Born around 635 or 645 in Herstal, a small village near modern-day Liège, Belgium, Pepin rose to power under the Merovingian King Theuderic III. During his tenure as Mayor of the Palace, Pepin played a significant role in strengthening the Frankish kingdom and expanding its territories. He is best known for his military campaigns against the Neustrians, the Aquitanians, and the Saxons, which resulted in the consolidation of Frankish rule over much of present-day France, Belgium, and parts of Germany. In 687, following the death of Theuderic III, Pepin seized the opportunity to expand his power and assumed the rule of Neustria and Burgundy. He continued to rule both Austrasia and these newly acquired territories until his death in 714. This period marked the beginning of the Arnulfing or Arnulfids dynasty, which would eventually lead to the rise of the Carolingian dynasty and the Frankish Empire. This image of Pepin of Herstal serves as a testament to his significant contributions to Frankish history and the enduring legacy of the Arnulfing dynasty. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving highlight the grandeur and power of the Frankish ruler during the Middle Ages.
