Mallee Fowl

CAN-2907
Malleefowl / Lowan - at nest mound
Australia
Leipoa ocellata
Also known as incubator bird / native pheasant or bush chook. Fm: Megapodes. Status: Vulnerable.
The malleefowl buries its eggs in the sand nest to incubate. The male tests the temperature of the nest mound by dipping his beak into it. If it is too warm or too cold he opens it up or adds more sand. Therefore he is able to keep the nest at a constant temperature of 34C.

EDITORS COMMENTS

Talk about a bird with serious nesting skills! Meet the CAN-2907, also known as the Mallee Fowl - the ultimate multitasking parent in the avian world. This incredible print captured by John Cancalosi showcases their unique and fascinating parenting techniques. In this snapshot, we witness a true marvel of nature: a Mallee Fowl single-handedly incubating its eggs within an extraordinary mound nest. Forget about traditional nests; these birds take it to another level! With meticulous precision, they construct mounds made of sand and vegetation that act as natural incubators for their precious offspring. But what makes this species truly stand out is their exceptional temperature control abilities. Just like expert chefs monitoring oven temperatures, Mallee Fowls carefully regulate the heat inside their mounds by adding or removing layers of soil. It's like having your very own thermostat! This remarkable feat not only ensures optimal conditions for egg development but also frees up valuable time for these feathered parents to focus on other important tasks. Who said juggling work and family was just a human thing? So next time you're feeling overwhelmed with parental duties, take inspiration from our friend CAN-2907 here – after all, if a bird can master temperature-controlled parenting while building impressive mounds in Australia's vast wilderness, surely we can handle anything.
