The Pearly Kings and Queens are an historic and unique part of English culture, originating in the late 1800s in the East End of London. The pearly tradition began when a street child, Henry Croft, was given a pearl-encrusted waistcoat by a wealthy woman as a gift. Henry, who later became a costermonger, adopted the waistcoat as a symbol of his trade and began charging small fees for good luck and blessings. The Pearly Kings and Queens of Hythe, seen here in their colorful regalia, were an important part of the local community and would hold annual pageants to raise funds for charity. The pageant would include a procession through the town, followed by a grand feast and auction. The Pearly King would preside over the proceedings, wearing his trademark pearly waistcoat, trousers, and hat, adorned with thousands of pearl buttons. The Pearly Queen, often accompanied by her attendants, would wear a large headdress, also covered in pearls. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, where community spirit and tradition were at the heart of local celebrations.
