EDITORS COMMENTS
This rare original postcard, depicting the White Star Line's RMS Olympic with a floating crane, is a fascinating glimpse into maritime history. The image, taken by Walton of Belfast between 1910 and 1911, shows the aftermost fourth funnel being lifted onto the ship using a crane designed by Bertha Krupp. Krupp, an influential German industrialist, is most famously known for designing the 'Big Bertha' gun used during World War I. The crane was manufactured by Benrather Maschinenfabrik in Germany and was capable of lifting a load of 150 tons to a height of 149 feet. The RMS Olympic, a luxury cruise liner and sister ship to the ill-fated Titanic, was a marvel of engineering and design during the early 20th century. This postcard, posted much later in 1939 from Northern Ireland, provides a unique perspective on the ship's construction. The handwritten address on the reverse side reads "Williams, Hornsey, London N8," and the postmark indicates that the postcard was sent during the 1930s. The stamp affixed to the card bears the image of King George VI, adding to its historical significance. The RMS Olympic was one of the largest and most luxurious steamships of its time, and this postcard offers a captivating glimpse into the intricate process of constructing such a magnificent vessel. With its rich history and intriguing backstory, this postcard is a must-have for collectors of maritime memorabilia and those interested in the history of shipping and industrial engineering.
