EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative watercolour painting, titled "The War Shrine, Whitechapel," captures a poignant moment in 1918 as a religious gathering takes place at a war shrine in the heart of London's East End. The scene is centered around the main priest, deeply engrossed in his book, as he leads the service. Surrounding him are choir boys in their crisp robes, their young faces focused and serious, and an organist, poised at the organ, ready to provide musical accompaniment. The congregation, made up of members of the public, includes a military man in uniform, his gaze fixed on the priest. The somber atmosphere is heightened by the muted colors of the painting, with the soft hues of the robes and the subdued tones of the stone shrine. This poignant scene was captured in April 1920, as recorded in the pages of Volume 12, April 1920 of the "March of the Women" collection. The painting, by Elfrida Tharle Hughes, offers a glimpse into the deep sense of community and faith that emerged during the tumultuous years of the First World War.
