EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative painting captures the serene atmosphere of Vespers, an evening prayer service, in the hallowed halls of St. Rombaux Cathedral. The religious figures, dressed in black robes, are deeply engrossed in their devotions, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of flickering candles. The imposing structure of St. Rombaux, or Saint Rumbold's Cathedral, stands majestically behind them, a testament to the enduring faith of the community. Construction of the cathedral began shortly after 1200, but a city fire in 1342 necessitated repairs and the beginning of a new phase. Renowned architect Jean d'Oisy oversaw the restoration and expansion efforts, leaving his indelible mark on the sacred space. This image, circa 1915, is part of the March of the Women Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online. The collection, which includes works by various artists, offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of religious practices and architectural wonders of the past. Volume November of this collection features the work of Edouard Joseph Eugène Claes, who masterfully captured the spiritual essence of this scene. Claes' use of color and composition invites the viewer to contemplate the profound connection between the devoted followers and their place of worship.
