EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite commemorative scissors set serves as a captivating souvenir of the historic launch of the QSS Lusitania on June 7, 1906. The 18-carat gold handles, shaped organically, bear the maker's mark for J. Rogers and Sons of Sheffield, while the stainless steel blades display the crossover engraving of John Brown and Co. of Clydebank and Sheffield, as well as the crest of the Cunard Steamship Company. The QSS Lusitania is prominently marked on one side of the handles. The launch event was widely reported in newspapers of the day. The Aberdeen Journal described Lady Inverclyde's role in the ceremony, "Lady Inverclyde slit the cord," while the Dundee Courier noted, "Lady Inverclyde cut the cord and set the hydraulic machinery in motion." The Yorkshire Post recorded that she swung the wine bottle and pressed a button to officially launch the ship. After the launch, Lady Inverclyde departed and did not participate in the later celebrations. This set comes with a black Morocco and gilt presentation box, inscribed "Souvenir of Launch of Q.S.S. Lusitania Clydebank 7th June 1906." The provenance of this rare artifact is well-documented, having been part of the Frank Webb Collection, purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1930. It was later given to R.C. Calam and then passed down through family descent.
