EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Osman I (1258-1326), the founder and first Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Osman is shown wearing a turban and a long, flowing robe, with a serious expression on his face. The inscription at the bottom of the print identifies him as the Bey (Emir or Prince) of the Imperial House of Osman, the Gazi (Warrior of the Faith) and the founder of the Ottoman Emirate, which later evolved into the Ottoman Empire. Osman I was born in the late 13th century in the region of Sogut in Anatolia, which was then part of the Seljuk Empire. According to legend, Osman received a vision from the Prophet Mohammed, which inspired him to lead his people to establish their own territory and defend the Muslim faith. With a small band of followers, Osman began to carve out a fiefdom for himself in the Anatolian peninsula. Over time, Osman's forces grew in strength and territory, and he was able to establish a formidable military and political power base. In 1300, Osman assumed the title of Sultan, marking the beginning of the Ottoman Sultanate. Under his leadership, the Ottoman Empire expanded rapidly, absorbing neighboring territories and establishing a centralized government. This engraving, produced in the 19th century by the French publishers Lemaitre, Lalaisse, and Pigeot for their work "Historia de Turquia" by Jouannin and Van Gaver, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Osman I as the founder of the Ottoman Empire, which would go on to become one of the most powerful and influential empires in world history. The image of Osman as a strong and determined leader, with a clear vision for his people and his faith, continues to inspire and captivate scholars and history enthusiasts to this day.
