EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century portrait depicts Mariana of Austria (1634-1696), the Queen of Spain and the consort of Philip IV. The portrait was painted by Juan Carreno de Miranda (1614-1685) and is currently housed in the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain. Mariana is shown seated in a grand interior, possibly the Royal Alcazar, with a sumptuous chair and table adorned with an inkwell and a desk. The Queen is dressed in the habit of a nun, signifying her commitment to the religious life and her role as a widow following the death of King Philip IV in 1665. The intricately detailed painting showcases the Baroque style of the time, with the use of mirrors and ornate furnishings reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the Spanish monarchy. Mariana's mourning attire and the somber tone of the portrait serve as a reminder of the solemnity and weight of the monarch's role. The portrait offers a glimpse into the history of European royalty and the artistic traditions of the time, making it a valuable addition to any collection of European art.
