EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a beautiful set of Japanese Hina Dolls, an essential part of a traditional annual Dolls Festival held on March 3rd, a special day for girls in Japan. The dolls, including the Dairi Hina or Court Dolls, are meticulously displayed on a shelf in a corner of a room. The Lord and Lady Dolls, dressed in elegant kimono and headdresses, are flanked by two Chigo or child pages, dressed in red and black national costumes. A stunning gold-leafed folding screen made of silk, adorns the background, adding an air of grandeur to the scene. These exquisite dolls, about one foot high and made of wood, are part of a set belonging to Princess Takamatsu. They were designed and crafted by the renowned Japanese doll maker, Yahei Tanaka, from Kyoto during the 1930s. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the dolls and their attire reflect the rich customs and traditions of Japan during that era. The Dolls Festival is a cherished tradition in Japan, where families display their Hina Dolls and invite guests to a grand dinner to celebrate the health and happiness of young girls. The dolls are believed to protect them from evil spirits and ensure their future prosperity. This photograph is a testament to the enduring beauty and significance of this unique cultural practice.
