Hilly Fields and Golf Course, Harborne, Birmingham: A Scenic View Towards Weymoor (circa 1908) This evocative photograph captures the picturesque Hilly Fields and Golf Course in Harborne, South West Birmingham, during the early 1900s. The scene showcases the undulating terrain of the golf course, with its lush, green fairways stretching out before the viewer's eyes. The gentle undulations of the land are accentuated by the presence of the nearby Weymoor Hill, which adds to the sense of tranquility and serenity. The history of golf in Harborne dates back to 1893, when the Harborne Golf Club was established. The first competition was held on December 26th of that year, with nine holes laid out at a site called Home Farm. However, due to a disagreement over the disposal of grass cuttings, the club relocated to Church Farm the following year. By 1902, the course had been expanded to a united 18-hole layout, with ten holes at Home Farm and eight at Church Farm. The photograph presents an idyllic scene of a bygone era, with the golf course's links, bunkers, and mounds creating a challenging yet beautiful landscape for players. The absence of modern buildings and infrastructure adds to the sense of nostalgia and historical significance. The view towards Weymoor Hill in the distance further enhances the sense of peace and natural beauty that the golf course offers. This photograph is a testament to the rich history and charm of Harborne Golf Course, which continues to attract golf enthusiasts and visitors alike. The undulating terrain, scenic views, and challenging layout have made it a beloved destination for golfers in Birmingham and beyond for over a century.
