Dragoons and Highlanders scattering the Rioters in Belfast. Accordingly, the 4th Dragoon Guards and the 78th Highlanders, accompanied by the Royal Antrim Rifles were marched to Durham Street, the boundary line between the Catholic and Protestant districts. After a small skirmish without either side being able to claim any advantage, the most desperate battle took place, in a brickfield which ran along one side of Dover Street, the belligerents assembled to the number of several thousands, throwing stones and pistols were shot. Date: 1872

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a chaotic scene in Belfast during the sectarian conflicts of 1872, as Dragoons and Highlanders are seen scattering rioters in the streets. The 4th Dragoon Guards and the 78th Highlanders, along with the Royal Antrim Rifles, were called to Durham Street, which served as the volatile boundary line between Catholic and Protestant districts. In this particular skirmish, neither side was able to gain an advantage until a fierce battle erupted in a nearby brickfield along Dover Street. Thousands of belligerents gathered, hurling stones and firing pistols in a desperate struggle for control. The image showcases mounted cavalry charging through the streets while infantrymen engage in hand-to-hand combat with rioters. The tension and violence of the moment are palpable as these forces clash amidst the backdrop of religious tensions that plagued Belfast during this tumultuous period. This historical photograph serves as a stark reminder of the deep-seated divisions that once tore communities apart in Ireland. It stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought to maintain order amidst chaos, shedding light on a dark chapter in Irish history that should never be forgotten.
