EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the Battle of Dragoman Pass, which took place on November 22, 1885, during the brief but intense Serbo-Bulgarian War. The Serbian army, under the command of General Mihailo Chernoevic, had previously held control of the strategic pass, a crucial crossing point between Bulgaria and European Turkey. However, following Bulgarian protests over Serbian encroachment into Bulgarian territory, the Bulgarian army, led by General Stefan Stambolov, launched a counteroffensive to reclaim the pass. The scene depicted in the photograph shows the aftermath of the successful Bulgarian recapture of Dragoman Pass. Bodies of fallen Serbian soldiers lie partially covered in the snow, a stark reminder of the human cost of war. A horse bolts in the distance, adding to the sense of chaos and disorder. The Serbo-Bulgarian War, which lasted just two weeks from November 14 to 28, 1885, began as a protest by Serbia against the unification of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. However, the Serbian forces were decisively defeated, leading to the end of Serbian expansionist ambitions in the region. The landscape in the background, with its rolling hills and snow-covered valley, adds to the sense of tranquility amidst the chaos of war. The Battle of Dragoman Pass was a pivotal moment in the history of Bulgaria and the Balkans, marking the end of Serbian military intervention in Bulgarian affairs and paving the way for Bulgarian independence and territorial expansion.
