EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor drawing captures the enchanting likeness of Dorothy Una Ratcliffe (1875-1957), an accomplished British artist, explorer, and fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.) and the Royal Anthropological Institute (F.R.A.S.). Known as "Mrs. Charles Ratcliffe," she is depicted in this image, circa 1929, with a loving expression as she tenderly clutches her cherished dog. Dorothy's artistic talent was discovered at an early age, and she went on to study at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Her artistic career flourished, and she became a well-known figure in the art world. However, her passion for adventure and exploration was equally strong. In 1901, she married Charles Ratcliffe, a fellow explorer, and they embarked on numerous expeditions together. One of their most notable adventures was their participation in the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, in 1901-1904. Dorothy served as the expedition's artist, documenting the journey through her paintings and sketches. Her artwork from this expedition is now held in the collections of the Royal Geographical Society and the National Maritime Museum in the UK. This watercolor drawing, with its warm colors and intricate details, serves as a testament to Dorothy's artistic abilities and her adventurous spirit.
