The Death of the Venerable Bede
In 733, Bede travelled to York, to visit Ecgbert, who was then bishop of York. The see of York was elevated to an archbishopric in 735, and it is likely that Bede and Ecgbert discussed the proposal for the elevation during his visit. Bede hoped to visit Ecgbert again in 734, but was too ill to make the journey. He died on 26th May 735 and was buried at Jarrow. Bede's remains may have been transferred to Durham Cathedral in the 11th century; his tomb there was looted in 1541, but the contents were probably reinterred in the Galilee chapel at the cathedral. Date: 735

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the somber yet enlightening scene of The Death of the Venerable Bede in 735. Bede, a revered saint, monk, author, and scholar from Northumbria, is depicted surrounded by a heavenly glow of light streaming through a window as he takes his last breaths.
In 733, Bede made a journey to York to visit Bishop Ecgbert and discuss the elevation of the see of York to an archbishopric. Despite falling ill in 734 and being unable to make another visit to Ecgbert before his passing on May 26th, 735, Bede's legacy lived on through his writings and teachings.
The image captures the momentous occasion with intricate detail - from Bede's peaceful expression as he transcends into eternity to the beams of light illuminating his presence. As a scribe and copyist known for documenting history, this portrayal pays homage to his life's work and contributions.
Bede's remains may have been transferred centuries later to Durham Cathedral where they were looted but likely reinterred in the Galilee chapel. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact that The Venerable Bede had on generations past and present.
