EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts a British Mark I tank, one of the first of its kind, making its way through the rugged terrain of a World War I battlefield, circa 1916. The tank's massive treads churn up the mud as it navigates through the labyrinth of shell holes left behind from intense artillery fire. The tank's thick armor and imposing presence would have been a formidable sight for the enemy troops hidden in the nearby trenches, as it provided much-needed support for the infantry in their relentless advance. The British Army, known colloquially as "Tommies," made extensive use of these armored behemoths during the war, with the first large-scale use occurring at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The tank's introduction marked a significant turning point in the war, as it provided a much-needed advantage on the battlefield against the seemingly invincible German defenses. This photograph, part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a unique glimpse into the harsh realities of trench warfare during World War I. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination of the soldiers who fought in this global conflict, and the innovative military technology that shaped the course of history.
