EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Church of England and the working class community of Newcastle during the Victorian era. The image, taken in October 1900, depicts the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Frederick Temple (1821-1902), delivering an address to an astonishing crowd of 6,000 working men at the congress hall. The Archbishop's powerful speech emphasized the transformative power of the Christian soul, providing solace and inspiration to men grappling with their trials. The clergy surrounding the Archbishop include, from left to right, the Bishops of Ripon, Derry, and Newcastle (leaning on his hand), Canon Gough (listening intently with his finger to his ear), the Bishop of Thetford, and Archdeacon Hamilton. Above the Archbishop's head, a shell acts as a sounding board, amplifying his voice to reach the vast assembly. The atmosphere is electric, with the working men, dressed in their Sunday best, hanging on the Archbishop's every word. The scene is a testament to the enduring connection between religion and the working class during this period, as well as the power of a well-delivered message to uplift and inspire. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the role of the Church in the lives of the working class during the Victorian era and the profound impact of religious ideas on the minds and hearts of the people. The image, taken from the Illustrated London News - Consolidated Archive Holdings Ltd, offers a unique glimpse into the past and the enduring power of the spoken word.
