The Dogger Bank Incident or Russian Outrage

The Dogger Bank Incident (or Russian Outrage ) occured on the 22nd October 1904, when the Russian Fleet (sailing to reinforce the 1st Pacific Squadron stationed at Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War) mistook 48 harmless British trawlers at Dogger Bank for an Imperial Japanese Navy force, leading to the loss of life of three British seamen, two by drowning and one from shock a year later. This card shows the damaged trawler Moulmein and its crew, lucky to have returned to port alive. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Dogger Bank Incident, also known as the Russian Outrage, took place on October 22, 1904, in the North Sea. In the midst of the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian Baltic Fleet, en route to reinforce the 1st Pacific Squadron at Port Arthur, mistakenly identified 48 harmless British trawlers at Dogger Bank as an Imperial Japanese Navy force. The Russian fleet, in a state of heightened paranoia, opened fire, resulting in the tragic loss of three British seamen. Two of them drowned in the chaos, while the third succumbed to shock a year later. This poignant image captures the damaged trawler Moulmein and its fortunate crew, who miraculously made it back to port alive. The hole in the hull is a testament to the harrowing encounter, while the lifebelts scattered on the deck serve as a grim reminder of the danger the fishermen faced. The incident, a regrettable case of friendly fire, underscores the tense and uncertain atmosphere of the time, as global powers clashed in a far-off land.
