EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving is an illustration of three varieties of hyacinths from Adam Lonicer's Krauterbuch, or Herbal, published in Frankfurt in 1557. The three types depicted are the Tassel hyacinth (Leopoldia comosa), the common hyacinth (Hyacinthus medius), and a larger variety of hyacinth (Hyacinthus magnus). The Tassel hyacinth, also known as Leopoldia comosa, is a rare and beautiful plant with long, slender stems adorned with delicate, bell-shaped flowers. The common hyacinth, Hyacinthus medius, is a well-known and popular spring-blooming bulb plant, with clusters of vibrant, fragrant flowers. The third variety, Hyacinthus magnus, is a larger and more robust type of hyacinth, with larger flowers and stronger stems. This botanical illustration is a stunning example of the intricate detail and artistry of 16th century botanical illustration. The woodblock engraving process involved carving the design into a block of wood, inking the carved surface, and then pressing the ink-covered block onto paper to transfer the image. The addition of handcoloring further enhances the beauty and accuracy of the illustration. This particular print is from a 17th century pirate edition or atlas of the Krauterbuch illustrations, which includes captions in multiple languages, including Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and English manuscript. The captions provide valuable information about the plants, including their medicinal uses and botanical properties. Despite the pirated nature of this edition, the quality of the illustrations remains exceptional, showcasing the enduring appeal and importance of botanical knowledge during the Renaissance period.
