This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Sycamore Maple, or Acer pseudoplatanus, also known as the Planetree Maple, Acero fico, or Platano falso. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The meticulous engraving was executed by Corsi, with the drawing and direction provided by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The Sycamore Maple is a magnificent tree native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. Its large, broad leaves, resembling those of the plane tree, have given it the common name "Planetree Maple." The tree's bark is distinctive, with irregular, flaking plates that reveal the under bark, which is a lighter colour. The Sycamore Maple is not to be confused with the American Sycamore, which is a different species. The Sycamore Maple is an important tree in the botanical world, and its edible fruits have been used for various purposes throughout history. The fruit, which resembles a cucumber or a small, green apple, is known as a samaras or keys. These fruits are often found attached to the tree in clusters and are dispersed by the wind. The Sycamore Maple is also related to other maple species, such as the Momordica balsamina, or Balsam Apple, and the Momordica charantia, or Balsam Pear. These plants, which are also depicted in Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, are important sources of food and medicine in various parts of the world.
