EDITORS COMMENTS
On the 11th of June, 1914, the Suffragette movement made headlines once again with a bold and daring attack on Westminster Abbey in London. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the aftermath of the incident. The Suffragettes, who were fighting for women's right to vote, had left a small bomb next to the Coronation Chair, causing significant damage to the chair and the surrounding walls. The explosion occurred without any injuries, but the symbolic attack on such a historic and revered site served to amplify the intensity of the suffrage campaign. The Suffragettes, who were known for their militant tactics, had already disrupted several public events and caused damage to property in their quest for change. This event, which took place just months before the outbreak of World War I, underscores the determination and resolve of the Suffragette movement and their unwavering commitment to securing women's suffrage. The damage caused by the bombing can be seen in the photograph, with the charred remains of the chair and the cracks in the walls serving as stark reminders of the price paid for the pursuit of women's rights.
