EDITORS COMMENTS
Sicre Gully, or Siclygully Pass, was a well-known mountain pass located between the Indian provinces of Bengal and Bihar. This image, taken from Lt. Col. Charles Ramus Forrest's "Picturesque Tour along the Ganges and Jumna," showcases the breathtaking scenery of the pass. The engraving, hand-colored by an unidentified artist, depicts a temple perched atop a hill, surrounded by the lush greenery of the valley below. In the valley, a group of bivouac tents can be seen, suggesting the presence of travelers or soldiers. The scene is further enhanced by the presence of an elephant, adding a touch of exoticism to the image. The gentlemen in the foreground, dressed in Regency-era attire, appear to be enjoying the picturesque view, perhaps even engaging in some light flirtation with the pretty shopgirls from the nearby boutique or magasin. The shopgirls, dressed in the latest modes, are busy attending to customers at their shop counter, selling gloves, hats, and other millinery items. The illustration, reminiscent of the works of Thomas Rowlandson and Richard Newton, is a delightful caricature of Georgian life. The playful touch of Yorick, the skull, peeking out from behind the temple, adds a whimsical element to the scene, reminding us of the fleeting nature of life. The hand-colored copperplate engraving, published by Rudolph Ackermann in London in 1823, is a testament to the artistic prowess of the time and remains a captivating representation of the beauty and charm of the Sicre Gully Pass.
