EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Cinq coquilles de tortue particulieres" (Five Particular Shells of Tortoises), showcases an intriguing assemblage of six distinct species of tortoises and turtles. The central figure is the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni), a common European species, with its intricately patterned carapace. To its right, the common padloper tortoise (Homopus areolatus) from Southern Africa is depicted, characterized by its flattened, disc-shaped shell. The geometric tortoise (Psammobates geometricus) from Central Africa is shown in the lower left corner, known for its unique, polygonal shell. The underside of the Hermann's tortoise is illustrated in the upper right corner, revealing the smooth, pinkish plastron contrasting with the brownish upper shell. The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is represented in the lower right corner, with its distinctively rounded carapace and webbed feet. This stunning illustration is taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae (Delights of Rare Nature), published in Nuremberg in 1771. The specimens were part of the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities owned by Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew and P.L. Muller. Christian Leinberger created the original illustration, which was then meticulously engraved by S. Leitner Jun. This engraving is a testament to the natural history exploration and documentation during the 18th century.
