EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts two exquisite and intriguing mushroom species: the Shaggy Scalycap (Pholiota squarrosa) and the Golden Pholiota (Pholiota aurea). The image, created by the skilled hands of Lassus, was based on an original illustration by A. Bessin for Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons," published in Paris by Paul Klincksieck in 1910. The Shaggy Scalycap, with its distinctive, shaggy, brownish-gray cap and scaly, brownish-red stem, is a common and widely distributed fungus found in Europe and North America. It is an inedible species, but its unique appearance has made it a favorite among mycological enthusiasts and naturalists. The Golden Pholiota, on the other hand, is a rare and beautiful mushroom, with a golden-yellow cap and a stem that is initially white but turns brown with age. It is a saprophytic fungus, meaning it obtains its nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter. The Golden Pholiota is a delicacy in some parts of Europe and is highly sought after by mushroom hunters. This beautiful and intricately detailed chromolithograph is a testament to the rich history of mycology and the dedication of early mycologists like Leon Rolland, who documented and illustrated these fascinating organisms for future generations to appreciate and learn from. The image captures the essence of these two unique mushroom species, inviting us to explore the natural world and the wonders it holds.
