EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts two exquisite and distinct fungi species, the Rough-stemmed Bolete (Boletus scaber) and the Red-capped Scaber Stalk (Leccinum aurantiacum), both native to France, Switzerland, and Belgium. The illustration, created by A. Bessin, was published in Leon Rolland's comprehensive guide to mushrooms, "Atlas des Champignons," in 1910. The detailed and vibrant print was later reproduced by Lassus. The Rough-stemmed Bolete, also known as the Scaber Stalk Bolete, is characterized by its rough, brown, and scaly stem and its yellowish-brown cap with darker pores. This edible mushroom is typically found in coniferous and deciduous forests and is known for its rich, earthy flavor. The Red-capped Scaber Stalk, on the other hand, boasts a bright red cap with a white, waxy rim and a long, smooth, and reddish-brown stem. This inedible fungus is often found in coniferous forests and is easily recognizable by its distinctive coloration. Mycology enthusiasts and historians alike will appreciate the intricate detail and accuracy of this beautiful chromolithograph, which offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of fungi in Europe over a century ago.
