EDITORS COMMENTS
This collection of 16th century relics offers a glimpse into the rich history of King Henry VIII and his era. The first item, a miniature portrait of Anne Boleyn, the infamous second wife of Henry VIII, was painted by the renowned artist Hans Holbein the Younger. The miniature is housed in an intricately carved ivory box, its lid adorned with delicate floral designs. Another miniature, this one of King Henry VIII himself, also by Holbein, is preserved in a similar ivory box. The miniatures were cherished keepsakes, likely worn as pendants or carried as personal mementos. A rosary carved from boxwood and a silver and gilt cup, presented by Henry VIII to the Barber Surgeons Guild, are also part of this collection. The rosary, a devotional object, would have been used for prayer and meditation. The cup, with its elaborate decoration and royal provenance, would have been a treasured possession. A sword with a hilt of crystals mounted in silver and a birding piece with a missing lock round out this fascinating assortment of relics. The sword, a symbol of power and status, would have been used for ceremonial purposes or in battle. The birding piece, a type of early firearm, would have been used for hunting. Together, these relics offer a tangible connection to the past, providing a glimpse into the life and times of King Henry VIII and the Tudor era.
